Background/synopsis:

Komi Can’t Communicate otherwise known as Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu is a slice-of-life, comedy series with a subtle dose of romance that released in the autumn 2021 season. The series centres around Shoko Komi who is the bright star of her class which everyone admires for her dazzling beauty. Unbeknownst to all is that Komi suffers from crippling social anxiety and is incapable of speaking!

Despite this communicate problem, Komi manages to maintain her popularity and keeps her big secret...

The Hero Chapter is the immediate sequel to the original Yuuki Yuuna and is perhaps the strongest season yet (I have not seen the Mankai chapter yet so that doesn't count in my reckoning). This season is largely story driven with the slice-of-life/comedy elements taking a back seat. The major plus in Hero Chapter is we get a more satisfactory ending that offers closure to the show. To get the most out this series I would recommend watching all the prequels though.

Episodes 2-3

Thoughts: With the second episode the new season really starts in earnest as we see Tanjirou, Zenitsu and Inosuke hit it off in the “entertainment district” aka the red light distract. The episode starts heavy in comedy so I imagine opinions will be mixed here. I know lots of people who watch Demon Slayer have said less than stellar things about the comedy skits this series dishes out so the first half could make for difficult viewing depending on your tastes...

Episode 10

Bojji has completed his training and even sports an impressive little sword which Kage is excited to see! Where did Bojji gain the strength to wield such a thing? The answer is soon revealed when he removes the sword from its sheath and all we see is a stick thin rapier! What a joker!


Kage can’t believe it and believes this stunt with the sword is just a load of porkies. Despa prefers to call it a bluff. Bojji meanwhile looks deflated that his little act didn’t spur a more positive reaction but when Despa tells him to buck up his mood immediately lifts. The Washio Chapter is actually a prequel to the original Yuuki Yuuna season although if you want to get the most out of this franchise I would still recommend watching the original Yuuki Yuuna over this. I say that because the revelations mentioned in this Washio chapter will spoil a major twist in the first season. In terms of the target audience this will be great for people who like slice-of-life anime or magical girls and is suitable for veterans and newcomers alike. The ending is stronger here and this chapter is an improvement over the first season.

Come enjoy the meals and on the side we got a bunch of rowdy and eccentric diners who will entertain you with their stories from a land far away! Yes this is a quirky series for those who like their anime to be a little different.

In this prequel I will be reviewing the first (second season depending on how you call seasons) in the Yuuki Yuuna franchise. If you are a fan of magical girls and drama then this could be worth a look as this series has got all the stuff to cater for such fans. Be warned though there are some dark moments particularly at the end which can be a tad depressive.

Things kick off with a flashback from a young Zen who is scolded for not getting a perfect score on the test. When a classmate calls for Zen, this only angers his mother further for she feels betrayed that he would hide such details. Although she allows him to attend, in act of aggression she digs her fingers painfully into his scalp.
